Your favorite train (with fine print)
If you were railfanning, what would you hope would be the consist, cars, and such?

Caveat: It needs to be a train that you would have a reasonable (would likely pass your regular spot at least once in a week or so) chance of coming through.

I would want an Intermodal double stacked all the way back led by either two NS SD70M-2s or some good ol' foreign power. Like this:

Am I clear?

trainboysd40 01-19-2010 06:06 AM

CP trains 400-404, with something other than a GEVo or AC4400. I'm not picky.

So y'all don't have to search, this is the closest I could find to his description.

That's not the best example, if I may be permitted to explain....
out here, you have the 100-200s. Autoracks, intermodals, and the power is always in annoying spots. 300 series, those are grain unit trains. 600s are other unit trains like potash and sulfer. 400-404? The only trains with an actual varied consist. They're the only trains left to look at that have cars that differ majorly from one another.

I like seeing intermodal trains, too. I like seeing all those trailers off the highway. But my favorite two types of trains would be a regular merchandise train with boxcars and old cars, etc. lead by anything with a standard nose. A close second would be a grain train with odd reporting marks on old hopper cars. I just saw a Pillsbury grain car a few days ago on NS.

But basically if it's a train, I'm there!

On NJT it would have to be a solid set of Comet IV coaches. It's rare since most trains run with at least a Comet V cabcar on the end.
On other lines, I like small uniform locals. All boxcar. All hopper. All tankcar.
It happens occasionally on the Conrail lines around here but I couldn't find any examples. Does a two car consist count?

Strictly following the rules, I'm going to say the plow train again.

...or matching Alcos.

(man does this photo need a re-edit)

But, seeing as Bay City is my home away from home as far as railfanning goes, I'd like to catch both of the CM's black U23Bs on the 701/702 Durand turn. They were paired together this past March, but I couldn't find the pair. Here's the only photo I have in the database of one.

Nice, clean UP 70Ms on a K-Line stacker and life is good for me!

UP heritage unit 1989 in the lead....something like this:

for me its something besides a GEVO, preferrably an older EMD engine with just a nice assortment of mixed freight.

I like matched power. :)

Class I - Manifest haulled by a Trio or Quartet of SD40's. (No, not a local!)
Regional/Shortline - Log Train / Pulp Paper/ Flat Cars (w/ Wood)

If I can't watch/photograph both or one of the other, then;

W&LE loaded Coke Train with W&LE and D&RGW Power.

coborn35 01-23-2010 06:35 PM

Trainfan, not a manifest but close enough:

You gotta get over to the states!

TrainFanNZ 01-24-2010 06:40 PM

Thanks coborn35 and yep I'm working on it :)

I'm Personally always looking for the Tropicana Train, sadly it most often comes through here at night or early morning, but when late it sometimes creeps into the daylight hours.

Anything pulled by a Geep or an Alco is excellent!

On NJT, 4112 (mostly because of its amazing Nathan P01235! ;-)) pulling a solid set of Comet Is.
Unfortunately, the days of anything pulling a set of CIs has passed :(

chuckman 02-14-2010 01:47 PM

A real heavy CSX manifest with a bunch of CN/CP/SOO units. (cowls and SDs, not gevos)

Nahant 02-15-2010 06:34 AM

An all Pacer Stack out of Global 3 pulled by something other then GEVOs or SD70Ms.

All times are GMT. The time now is 03:19 PM.
