John West returns to the scene of the crime!

Some of you may recall "Senior Curmudgeon" John once or twice remarking that he had some regrets about his avatar picture not making the database. Well, this recent shot is a pretty darn excellent alternative!

Yeah... I did a double take - couldn't get the avitar in yet all along had that pic set aside - kind of makes you wonder what else John has hidden in that big ol' shoebox!

I have already mentioned to John that I have "shoebox envy".

Glad to see a version in the database!

Thanks guys for the kind remarks. No "regrets", I was really pissed. I mean REALLY pissed. The avatar was one of my favorite shots! But I talked to a therapist and got over it....sorta. She prescribed some Johnny Walker Black Label, which helped. With tincture of time, I can say philosophically it is the kind of thing that makes RP challenging as well as fun. At least I got shots one and four in. Two got rejected, and I'm still working on three.

Mitch, the big shoebox has its price! Ya wanna trade places?

I still like John's avatar better. Looks more other-worldly than the database pic!

They sure look similar - maybe it's time to repost?
Times change, tastes change.... it's not your typical rejected wedgie!

the dirty truth

First off, the version that I'm using for an avatar was "optimized" by our good friend Christine from Down Under who does magical things with images. But the cropping is probably too "square" for RP. When I tried to do the tighter cropping myself (more train, less trees and water) that the screeners suggested would make it RP worthy, I started to loose image quality. My first reaction when I get a rejection is to do an 11x14 and hang it on my wall. But in this case the 11x14 had serious image quality problems. Best I could do was an 8x10 version. Net net, it makes a nice avatar, but I can't say that it is a good enough image for RP. The image was taken long enough ago that I can't remember the specifics, but with the two trains meeting my guess is I was hand holding, which may have resulting in some loss of sharpness in what is clearly my favorite image. But such is the luck of action photography where you have to make decisions faster than the brain can check on all the camera settings.

Huh! I never noticed! That's the problem with tiny images. There's nothing like a good-sized print to increase the impact.

I have no idea how she does it. She must have some sort of magical version of Photoshop that I do not have.

I like both shots, but the lighting on the avatar is a lot better. Too bad it didn't make it in. Don't blame ya for being pissed either! Upload a full version of the avatar if its not too much trouble (or link to it), I wouldn't mind seeing a full sized version of it.

C'mon folks, do I have to explain the obvious?

Photoshop CS
CS = Christine Sweetnam

Looking forward to CS4, Christine!

:-) Good one, Mitch. However, I think you left an "e" off the end of her last name. ;-)

If so, I'll let Christine Photoshop it in... but under "photographers", that's how she has her name spelled.

Ahh, I was going to ask who she was.

I'm on the road for a couple of weeks. But all this encouragement makes me want to try the avatar again, either for RP or just post a larger version here. The lighting really is nice. Thanks again for all the positive vibes.

At least post the full size image, John! I've never really looked closely at your avatar, but seeing this other image of yours has now piqued my interest.
