Colors in the rejected shot definitely look more...

Colors in the rejected shot definitely look more realistic. The accepted shot looks closer to a water color painting now. Surprised they chose that over the original.

What camera are you using that is 16:9 as opposed to 3:2 from a DSLR?

Crop it to 3:2 with the train a little below center and you should be fine.

It jumped out at me not because of the harsh light, as you say (I think it looks fine), but rather because of the tight crop. The crop for the early spring shot is spot on though.
