Both of these should make it on with a couple of (hopefully) easy fixes.

For the first shot, make it a vertical. Keep the sky and cut off as much on the right until it fits the proper dimensions....

Agreed. If anything, it should have been rejected for the horrible post-processing job, from the halos around the train to the oversharpening of everything in the frame.
