On the 430EX II the flash can manually be fired...

On the 430EX II the flash can manually be fired in either ETTL or Manual mode. Manual mode may be more suited for your needs as you can then set the flash output as a fraction of full power.

I croppoed the image and it was rejected because of sizing, fixed the sizing issue and now it is being rejected for a totally different reason. Should the photo not been rejected for poor lighting...
