I've seen plenty of depressing places in the U.S. like Detroit, NYC in the early 80's, Baltimore, the ENTIRE state of Ohio, parts of rural WV post-coal, but the difference is here at least structures...

Sunrise/Sunset/Twilight shots are extremely hard to capture, i've always had problems with them. Especially with my older gear. Dynamic range has been an issue. This is one of the ones I worked on...

I hadn't seen Sam's shot until you linked it, I actually like his a little better because of the lighting and it being a little looser gives it a little depth that I like. They are both fine shots.
