I think the best bet is to wait for an actual train to show up so both sides aren't empty. You'd want a westbound there in Kent, so also wait for the lead engine to fill a bit more of the frame. ...

As for the original photo in question, I'd say the cropping is a bit off, but good enough and better than your standard 34 wedge.
