Here in Vegas, where the crews change inbound/outbound...they often call out their train symbol info to the yard office, in advance of their arrival. This way the oncoming crew can get needed...

Railfanning is like fishing...just go out and have fun...you never know what you might snag...

A scanner does help though....if you want to set up for a specific shot/area.
