Jim likes being argumentative about words and does not realize or does not care how that makes the rest of us think of him.

Notwithstanding the dictionary definition, words are used at times in specific contexts where their meaning is constrained. In railroading, a steam locomotive cannot be a unit. As far as I know, in North American usage.
