RR tracks near DuPont should be cleared of derailed cars by noon

DUPONT, Wash. -- Hundreds of people worked overnight to clear railroad tracks near DuPont of derailed train cars.

Spokesman for the Union Pacific trains and Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks say one set of tracks should open at noon and the parallel tracks at one.

Amtrak trains should be back on schedule this afternoon.

U-P spokesman James Barnes and B-N spokesman Gus Melonas (mel-OWN'-us) say there's no word yet on what caused four engines and eight cars from two trains to leave the tracks yesterday morning as they were passing at a switch.

One of the engines went about 75 feet down an embankment and crashed into the Old Nisqually Highway. Three crewmen were not hurt.

Melonas says it will take about a week to remove two of the derailed locomotives and several weeks to finish all the work at the site of the accident.
