Default Arthur's Pass New Zealand

Looks like I'm NZ bound in August 2011. Primarily to visit family, but I'd like to try and squeeze in some railfan photography. The coal trains over Arthurs Pass appeal. Some questions:-
1) What is the frequency of coal trains over the pass? Have these been reduced by the recent mining disaster and earthquake?
2) Is any particular time of day busiest or is it hit and miss?
3) Is there any other freight over the Pass besides the coal? (I know about the daily passenger trains)
4) Is there anywhere else in NZ where some freight activity at a reasonable level can be guaranteed?
Thanks
Bob Avery, Scotland.
