Video Conversion/Editing Software

I've been using OJOSoft Video Converting and Windows Movie Maker to edit my videos off of my Sony camcorder. Everything about it is a hassle. First, the quality of my finished product is terrible. For that quality, I should have just bought a Flip. Plus, it is time consuming, usually taking me many nights to convert and edit the video. Windows Movie Maker is limited in its ability, and it is slow.

So, is there a product that lets me edit m2ts files straight from the camera and does so efficiently? Any recommendation is welcome, since I don't want to spend money on more junk.

I've been happy with Sony Vegas - I started out on Vegas Platinum and upgraded to Pro a few months ago. You should be able to find Platinum on Amazon or similar sites for well under $100 - they have a couple of flavors, a basic editor and the editor bundled with sound editing and DVD burning software. I see .m2ts as one of the file import formats in Pro; I'm 99% sure it's there in Platinum too (or whatever they call that version nowadays). They have 30-day trial downloads available if you want to take it for a spin first.
