I'm thinking an earlier shot just coming out of the pit of the curve, tele'd in, less shadowed area on the right, lead locomotive to the right, less centered. This would show more of the context of train even though the locomotive is the main subject.

Well, I submitted an earlier frame and it was accepted.

I like the original one better, the accepted one is pretty ordinary.

I was expecting you to go for a frame in between, one where the power had curved to face to the left but the nose had not yet made it to the middle of the frame.

I could have, however the original was rejected for lack of light on the nose or train.

I have another series at this spot from earlier in the day, perhaps I will do something like you suggest.
