Default Modeling Questions

Been working on a few models recently, and I’ve got a few questions…

1) What is the cylinder-shaped object located just above the left ditch light in the following photos?

2) Why does UP cover up the front door windows on some of the locomotives, such as many of the SD60M’s?

Thanks to anyone who can help answer my questions,
Matt

No clue on the cylinder, but I think UP plates over the nose window for safety reasons, i.e. to prevent stuff from going through it in a collision.

My guess would be taken from the evidence of graffiti. I can't say that I have seen a single UP unit up in MN that has a plate over the window.

I believe the tube held flags or hoses when not in use.
