Default Bad Cropping

I have quite a few shots rejected for bad cropping and wanted to get some advice on how to crop this shot better. Thanks

In many cases, the bad cropping rejection is a result of too much or too little space around the subject. In your case it is too much space. Notice how the nose of the locomotive is centered in the frame, with too much "tree space" to the left of it.

If you're not familiar with the rule of thirds, look it up. In the case of your photo, if the nose of the locomotive was placed along the left third of image, the photo would be more balanced. This should be a good place to start.

Basically, the train is too centered in the frame. RP.net prefers images composed using the "rule of thirds". Google that, and you'll have a starting point to work from.

Do not, under any circumstances whatsoever, click here. Don't even think about it. I'm warning you!

"start" is the operative term, as there are other issues with the shot. The image quality is not so hot, needs sharpening at least and probably a contrast adjustment, maybe exposure also. As far as this site goes, RP is not a big fan of standard shots with noses that don't have full light, although this one isn't too bad. Lots to do, lots to learn. Good luck!
