Default CSX and NS activity on Labor Day weekend

Anyone know if CSX or NS will be cutting back any on Labor Day weekend, I will be up in the Sand Patch area. If things are slow, I may head North to the West Slope or South to Pokey land

OK I don't know but most lines hold as much as they can is the norm. But hot and some slower trains must run to make an unload will run. I get -50% Saturday Sunday and Monday is a late in the day Trains move?

The high priority trains will probably run, and Amtrak will run but the locals and lower priority will probably tie down for the weekend.

Not sure what the traffic will be like on Sand Patch but if it's anything like the 4th of July was, I would look elsewhere. I was at the Patch on July 5 and there was no activity. I sat at Keystone from about 8 AM until noon without seeing a single train.

Yea, I found out CSX is shutting down everything except priority intermodal and things like certain coal trains which have to hit deliveries from 7am Sunday until 7am Tuesday, so I may be going elsewhere.

Anyone have any update on NS?

Where did you find this, Troy? I've been trying to find this myself.

A five second Google search gave me this:

http://www.csx.com/?fuseaction=custo...detail&i=50865

CSXT to Provide Two Days of Demurrage Relief for Upcoming Holiday
Released: Aug 27, 2010

This Labor Day, relax and receive two days of demurrage relief.

During the Labor Day holiday, CSX is providing two days of demurrage relief. All merchandise traffic covered by the CSXT 8100 Tariff will get two additional credits to cover the 48-hour curtailment. This demurrage relief will be reflected in the September billing statements.

Holiday Reminders

CSX will have limited service between 7:00 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 5 - 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, Sept 7 in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Full operations will resume thereafter.

In advance of every holiday, it is essential that you place your car orders as early as possible - three weeks out is ideal.

Thanks Steven. All I could find was CSX's Labor Day schedule from 2009. I feel stupid.

Trip Report:
Left DC at 2:30pm with my rental car (2010 Jeep Commander). Got on I495 and it was bumper to bumper 0-30mph to I277, same speeds to I70, when it finally sped up a little. Took 4 hours to get to cumberland, normally takes like 2, 2.5 hours. Just after exiting, I go to the Super 8 which I have stayed before, they are booked, try a couple other places, all booked. There is this car show in town, so I decided to drive to Sommerset, PA where they have vacancies. Heading up US 40, still in cumberland, some asshole pulls out in front of me and I T-Bone him. 2 hours later after a tow truck patches me up enough to drive, I am on the interstate heading for Roanoke, the closest place that my rental car company has available vehicles that is also a ralifan destination. Of important note, the cop did not give the guy a ticket (maryland state police), they wrote the "police report" on a piece of stationary, hand written one copy for me, one copy for the other guy. It will take 4.5 hours to get to Roanoke, I pull into a rest area somewhere off of I81 North of Roanoke around 2:30am because I could not drive any more. I "sleep" in my busted ass rental car until 5:30, when I wake up and drive into roanoke. I get to the airport just at 8am where I get the last vehicle they have, a 2009 Nissan Altima. I leave the rental car place around 9:30am after all the paperwork is done. I spend the rest of the day tired, around the christiansburg district and just got into a sleep inn in Dublin, VA, which is apparently the only motel in the piedmont with rooms.

I picked the wrong weekend to leave the comfort of my work paid for Hilton...

One train I just missed today, did not get a pic of it, was a loaded grain train on the whitethorne district with a Warbonnet CW40-8, an ex-SOO leaser SD40-2, and a NS GP50, train of the day!

Troy - Lots of trains still running on the Alleghany Sub for CSX. They are catching up from the service interruption due to Earl.

Lemme know if you decide to come this way.

CSX is running them steady tonight with a few more expected to run east through the night. CSX should wind down in the AM around dawn and will stay quiet on the Kanawha most of the day. Monday is looking about the same.

Not sure what will move east out of Hinton in the morning, but there are plenty moving towards Hinton tonight. I'm guessing they'll start stacking up in Hinton in the morning hours and will tie down either in the yard or east of the yard.

As for NS, I'm not sure. Will keep you posted if CSX runs them east of Hinton in the morning.

I'm going out shooting tomorrow, trains or no trains. There's a court house I need to reshoot that is top on my list. I'm hoping the L&C will run at least one train, but if not, they'll be tied down somewhere. A couple of spots of old ROW are telling me to come and shoot them, too. This is the first time I've been able to gt out for a while and just shoot what I want, so if they'renot running trains, that's OK. It's going to be gorgeous over this way.

I'm heading back to DC tonight, then back to FLORIDA on Friday. I am up in DC for work, but had the weekend free to myself. Today was good

I never made it, lol! I ended up spending the whole weekend in and around the NS New River lines and Pokey. It was a good weekend though, and thank god for that timely cold front that came through Friday afternoon, made for perfect railfan weather, almost like fall came early, hopefully it doesnt throw off the leaf change schedule.

I don't think it will. From what I understand it is mainly based on the length of the days, but I could be wrong.

I'm hoping the same thing. A lot of lighter greens and yellows popped up after two nights of the temperature getting down into the 40's.

That and all the leaves I saw falling on the back roads got me worried...

I've seen some very sparse trees with leaves that were changing when I was at Sand Patch a couple weeks ago. It's not that uncommon around here though. I'd say the leaves will be on schedule this year, with (most likely) the second week of October being about the best. At least I hope so because I'm planning to take a week off to spend some time getting photos with the brilliant colors!!
