Default Fall 2011 - What will you do?

With fall fast approaching (and some areas already feeling like it's here) I've begun to focus more on planning out things in late September and all throughout October. Fall is personally my favorite time to take a few road trips and come home with some good stuff.

I'm planning on hitting Norfolk Southern's Marion Branch in north-central Indiana at least twice, along with at least one outing on the C&O in Ohio between Marion and Toledo, and of course a few more local outings in the spare time. Hopefully the colors don't disappoint, and the skies stay clear!

What do the rest of you have planned?

I've got a client who's commissioning me to take a panoramic photo of the highest road pass in Canada. That will be fun. For trains? Who knows.

Fall in the New River Gorge of West Virginia. I'm planning to showcase a bit of its beauty...

I am having to leave a week later than I want to because of work. But I will spend a few days in SW Pennsylvania on the B&O and Monongahela, then a few days on the C&O West of Clifton Forge and East of Charleston, then a few days on the N&W between Roanoke and Williamson, then a day on the North end of Clinchfield, then a day on the Southern between Danville and Harriman. I just hope I dont miss the leaves and the weather cooperates, because I cant eave till 10/20. That may be a bit ambitious, but let's see what happens. Funny you mention this, as I had just started working on my tentative itenerary and mapping out a couple locations I have never been before or feel I could do more in.

I may run into some of you in the process...

Tell you what though, gas is going to kick my ass this year. I hope it drops like a rock in the next month.

Troy,

When will you be between Clifton Forge and Hinton? I've got October 6th through October 12th in the air (I'll be somewhere in WV), then I have October 17th through October 24th booked in the Clifton Forge area.

It's up in the air now. I just found out I may be able to leave a few days earlier. I had planned on being in the CF are on around that time frame. I am trying like hell to leave 10/16 instead of 10/20. A lot has to fall into place for this to happen. But worst case scenario, I will be leaving the 20th after work, driving through the night...

Gotcha. Color is already subtly changing in places, but for the most part, I'd say we're looking at/around the same time frame as last year for color..

PM me your cell number..

I'm hoping to go get some Pan Am shots in MA.

Maybe Sand Patch grade as well, I've always wanted to go there.

I'd love to do both of those in the fall as well, but I won't have time this year. Thankfully, this is my last year of high school and I should be able to make it out there next year.

You're marrying the wrong girl, Ben.

Ben, what happened to the woman who went trackside with you and has shots on RP? Or am I thinking of someone else?

I'm joking around.... hahaha. That girl that used to go with me is the one I'm marrying. She got caught up in college( just graduated from Cal u) and still goes out once in a while with me. The color is changing fast around here, and the timing of the wedding is conflicting with when I wanna start heading out. Maybe it'll be near peak in the few weeks after but work is not jiving with me either. We'll see, I'll try to make it out somewhere.

Haha, how about a romantic railfanning honeymoon

Or do you want to be married for more than a week?

That would certainly have been true for me, but did you see the article in Trains about J Alex Lang having a train stopped and proposing on the Rockville bridge in Harrisburg, PA?

Mrs. Sutton said no trains while we're in Erie. Hopefully I can get out this weekend. Depends on color. Trees are near or at peak right now up here. It's beautiful.

Thanks! Colors are changing so quickly I don't have the time to plan a big trip. I have to work Monday through Saturday for a while too. So it looks like the usual sand patch or west slope. One area this weekend and the other next rain or shine. But that's if there's even any leaves on the trees next weekend.

I went to Disney World with the kids and was hoping to get some good pictures of their steam operations. Unfortunately, it rained the whole time.

Looks like I'll get a day or two to explore northeastern PA, otherwise that's it for me this season. The rest of my fall will likely be spent studying, working, or just hanging out. It's amazing how much priorities can change when you get to college with little time and less money (don't worry though, I should be back in full force come January).
