Ugly and unfortunate, but true. Moose are stupid - even on the road.
You will notice the moose is running down the tracks with no intention of turning - mostly because of the snow banks. Second, you don't just stop a train in a short distance (and RTC might get PO'd). If the crew did stop, what would they do? That moose is too big to lift out of the way.
On the tracks nearby here, a loaded grain train recently hit a bear cub. So if you think the RTC can get PO'd, just think, now would not be a good time to mess with mama bear.

I read somewhere recently that dogs have this problem - they continue to run between the rails even though they can jump to the side. True?

Well, my scientific mind says let's experiment and see.

Here boy! C'mon, wanna go for a ride? Good boy, let's go for a ride to the tracks!

Its true, dogs will only get off were they get on. I have tons of deer and elk, most of the time if you turn the head light off they get out of the way, but not always. And it is really loud.

I had a pitbull once stand in the tracks and bark at me until I hit it.

Default People animals trains

Animals and people both have the same problems being near or on the tracks, to bad the animals do not realize the danger, as most humans should. As to a train stopping that won't happen for an animal and most of the time when they stop for a human it's to late. Basic math by the time they see a human it's to late to stop a train in time.

Was Michael Vick standing trackside when this happened?

I was listening to the scanner one night in northern Minnesota when the crew of a loaded coal train nearly hit a couple of black bears. They were telling the DS that they nearly hit two bears and I could hear the horn and everything just blaring in the background.

Stop when? Before hitting the animal or after?

When I first saw this video about a week ago, I wondered why the engineer didn't lay on the horn. Seems it probably would have scared the hell out of that moose and perhaps got him to leave the path of the train. You can see it pick up speed as the train gets closer, so it KNOWS something is following it. Maybe a gazillion decibals blaring down on it would have spooked it away.

A few years ago I saw a dog walking along the tracks and when a train came around the corner the dog reacted in a similar manner to what the moose did. Fortunately, the dog jumped off the tracks before being killed. Seeing the remains of animals (and people once) on the front of trains is a sight I do not recommended for most.

Does anyone else have any links to other videos that are interesting like this one? I recall seeing a head on collision not long ago somewhere.

I was talking to an engineer buddy tonight and he said he saw a dog CHAINED to the tracks. Luckly they got put into the siding and were able to save the dog. Thats got to be the sickest thing I have heard of.

I'd like to see that chain tied to the sick freak that tied that dog there. And of course have you guys take the switch so you wouldn't have to go through the terrible phenomenon of hitting someone. Bet that would be the last time they screw around like that.
