Default Opinion needed on rejected pictures

Dear RP.net members, your opinion/comments about the below rejected pictures would be appreciated.

Backlit:

This photo has been taken on a rainy day (no sun). How can it be backlit ??

Underexposed:

I do not believe that this picture is really underexposed. My friend Jean Marc Frybourg has recently posted several pictures from the same railway that have also been taken during a rainy day and that are also relatively dark. They have been accepted. Many other pictures accepted every day are much darker than this one.

Backlit (side):

I have appealed the two first photos. As expected, the appeal has been rejected without comment.

Many thanks in advance for your input, and a very Happy New Year to all of you.
Daniel

Hi Daniel, You would have had 2 favorites from me if these photos had been accepted. The "under-exposed" photo looks dark and grainy to me. Probably an expected rejection.

Perhaps you were unlucky with the screener you got. As you mention, photos from others were accepted - this is a key point. I often get similar rejection reasons that don't seem correct. I don't need to say more than I have said already in this forum about the reasons I believe could be in play, except to say take care with appealing rejections. I've finally learnt not to!

First one: they gave the wrong reason but the rejection is well in line with RP practice.

Second one: looks like the structure and setting means this particular screener is willing to relax on the light preferences. Try brightening just a bit.

Third: this is the one I would have appealed! Certainly not the first one! I'd prefer a bit off the right and a bit more on the left (yes, shifting away a bit from rule of thirds) - perhaps just a touch of shadow reduction on the nose might get it in. Nice shot!

Daniel, I agree with what Janusz suggested with this photo, except I suggest that you don't appeal even though their rejection reason could be considered invalid. A new version could be submitted as a new photo though that might be bending the rules a bit.

I want to say how much I enjoy seeing your photos and would like to see more of them. You were one of the first I looked for on Flickr.com but couldn't find. I dream of the "coffee table" photo books we could have today with photography of your superb style and standard.

Many thanks for these warm compliments about my pictures John. They are very much appreciated.

The second attempt was successful. Here it is:

Excellent photo and 6 favorites already. Maybe the initial rejection did you a favor. I have realized this many times with my own photo rejections.

I hope that you have a web page or Flickr.com collection one day!

All the best for 2017.
