Not to dredge up an old thread,but...

I finally made the jump and started a page on Flikr. My primary reason was to view the work of other photogs there that used to post regularly here, whose work I enjoy and admire.

Is there a way I can set it so that when someone uploads a new photo it either notifies me, or shows up when I log in? I guess sort of like the feed on Facebook does? I was too exhausted last night to figure it out on my own.

Do I just start finding people whose work I like, and save them as a contact? I shied away from that last night because I didn't want it to turn into another version of Facebook (not that I use FB much anyway).

thanks

The best way I know is to make those folks your contact and then just check that oage every day or two. It will tell you what contacts have updated their photostream recently.

Yes, as Joe said you make the person a contact, and that will notify you when they upload.

Flickr is different than Facebook in that you can post on peoples pictures whether you are a contact (the same as a friend on FB) or not.

Also, the person you listed as a contact can list you as a contact or not.

Unlike FB you can still view peoples pictures and comment on them even though you are not one of their contacts.

Additionally, the free account on Flickr limits you to 200 images.

If you buy a subscription then the number is virtually unlimited.

Flickr is also good because it does not have a specific file or format size so you can upload your originals if you want.

Does anyone know how to separate multi word tags? So instead of "unionpacific" or "Union Pacific", I can get "Union Pacific". Other examples would be "Feather River Canyon" and "Donner Pass". What do you guys do for that?

For those interested, I just uploaded some shots of detoured stack trains in the Feather River Canyon. Feel free to check them out.

I like railpictures, but sometimes the hassle-free uploading of flickr is nice...more freedom too with sets, groups (I administer about 10 right now), collections, and contacts.

Great site, and for those of you that are thinking about going Pro, take the plunge...I did, and I'm quite happy with the benefits.

Funny. You actually answered your own question. If you want multi word tags, just put quotations around them -- "Union Pacific" or "Feather River Canyon."

Pretty sure Mark is more than a conductor...or at least I thought he was.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

Whoever said 9 out of every 10 photos is crap is obviously not doing the right things. I find much as much or more compelling stuff on Flickr then I do on RP. Just my opinion.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/brentkneebush/ There is mine.

Flickr is the best image hosting site out there, IMO.

Well of course you do. There are gazillion photos of limitless subjects on flickr, so the odds are greatly increased that you'll find much more compelling photos.
