Default Huge dynamic range challenge

I've browsed through my older shots and found some from autumn special ride. But... The shots I liked most are images of scenes with very high dynamic range and they got nailed for being overexposed:

I've tried editing them to reduce highlights, but I'm running into problems then - in first case the sky above motor car starts to posterize and in second case I've got problem with getting colours right.

Shadow/highlights tool in PSE7 works wonders, for a start.
