Default Bad contrast on backlit photo

So I've managed to fix poor lighting and bad cropping and now I'm stuck at bad contrast with this one:

I still don't have an eye for this issue, so I'm only guessing what could I do:
- do a high radius/low amout USM to locally boost contrast?
- try to make just people more contrasty?
- do a more aggresive USM in the end to make the light on twigs to the right?
- or something else? what?

Any advice appreciated...
