Gallery: Blue Hour
One of the hardest times to catch with a very short time to catch it in, the blue hour. Morning blue hour seems to be the better of the two.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

I may be bending the rules a little bit here, since technically this is not considered the "blue hour", but a full moon sky sometimes gives the impression of twilight.

Here's mine..the only one. The spots I shoot at generally don't translate well to not being able to see the background...

I like the Blue and the Golden Hours.
This is way past the "Blue Hour" but it looks like it because of a long exposure.

The blue hour is one of my favorite times to shoot -- unfortunately, this is a preference that doesn't always work out well when living in the Seattle area.

My favorite ones that I've taken:
Evening:

Morning:
 | PhotoID: 316401 Photograph © Michael Harding |
I'm mostly a "sunny wedgie" shooter or otherwise have a few night shots but not much in the way of true "blue hour" shots on here although it's an interesting time to shoot.
Regards,
Michael

Thanks Travis for including one of my photos in your thread!
David,
your photos inspired me to shoot primarily during the blue hour this last winter. The hard part is since it's night time lighting to not just shoot roster shots at blue hour. I have yet to find a good location in my area of Chicago or suburbs to get a pan shot. I think I also need a better tripod head. Getting some movement is my goal for next winter. Then again, see my comment below to Peter "Crazytiger" Lewis.

That's exaclty the magic of the blue hour. Most people don't know about it because it's imperceptable to the untrained eye. Imagine my shock when my 7 year old this spring made the comment after leaving drum lessons during a beautiful blue hour night "Dad, you know how light normally looks yellow? It looks blue tonight!" Future photog in training?
Peter,
sorry I missed you this weekend. Your shots remind me that I have some streak type shots of the signal changeover at Naperville I want to try.
Here are some others of mine.

Paul, I'm not gone yet, but I will be in about 18 hours. I have managed to come to Naperville and have yet to see someone else trackside. I did have someone drive by when I was standing at the Loomis St. crossing in a Black X-Terra and I noticed that the guy riding shotgun had a BNSF hat on. As he was crossing the tracks, he yelled, "FOAMER!!" I yelled back, "YEP!!" No clue if it was employee or fan. Also, in Wheaton today, at the College Ave. station, I had an ill-informed station agent sincerely warn me not to take pictures. She said, "It's against the law." I asked as of when, assuming she would say 9/11, which she did. She went on to say, "If the police see you, they will arrest you and take your camera." Little did she know that inside, I was rolling in laughter, but also quite concerned by her ignorance. I hope to get to Bensenville tomorrow, but it's a long shot. Anyway, got some good BNSF, AMTK, METX, and UP action so far.
