The Bad Cropping Blues
This was hit. I have more on all sides so should I move the engine more to the left off the frame? That is my thinking but since I seem to be a bad cropper, I would like another opinion. I will fix the oversharp issue. Thanks for help.

I second that. Not much interesting on right. Little tight as below. Also looks dark on my monitor. Attachment 8438

Sullivan's Curve
Hum, you're in my area now - like them rocks?
Here is a shot that I have in the DB from this spot and that might give you an idea as to where to start.
 | PhotoID: 367152 Photograph © EL ROCO Photography |
My shot was late in the afternoon, in June so the light is very different.
I would also suggest using a subsequent frame with the train further to your left, or else chopping off the empty space on the left of your original - course you will probably loose the rooks on the top if you do that.

Wow, one of those shots is majorly unlevel. Carl's or Billy Bob's?

Do they build unlevel transmission towers?

I just wanted Billy Bob to admit it and now you called him out on it. Prepare for a two page diatribe of why he thinks that shot is level (especially since you and I have never been there).

HG is claiming Sullivan's Curve as his own now? His level of egocentrism knows no bounds!

My power towers are plumb and Lloyd's argument is what I would say to a screener - although like everything else here, it really doesn't matter.

If "plumb" means "leaning to the right," then I'd have to say you are correct.

Before I go that route I went with a more 2:1 crop since I really wanted to show the massiveness (sp) of the rock formation of the curve and how it dwarfs the train. I guess since my rejection again was again for bad cropping and not for the aspect ratio the door is open for more panoramic type images.

My take.
I leveled, brightened, and cropped.
I went to Sullivan's Curve a few times over the decades. I even zipped through last March on the freeway. I would love to go back.
Good shot.

Thanks Dennis. I will give it one more shot following your edit. I did appeal my last shot and was pleasantly surprised that even though they denied my appeal, I at least got an explanation. The screener said "The image is very unbalanced with way too much rock on the right side of the frame. Thanks!"
I wanted to show the "massiveness" of the rock formation to the RP viewers since it does make everything else near it appear miniature in scale. Oh well, Que Sera, Sera.
I would like to go again also. I know the place well since I went there two years in a row. Heck, I could be a guide...LOL

Carl,
I kind of liked your 2:1 cropped landscape crop with all of the massive rock on the right side. It was different, hence, could draw you in. But I can see why the the appeal was rejected since it IS different and “unbalanced” from what is normally chosen.
I’d be happy to take you up on being a guide to photographing Sullivan’s Curve!
