Successful pan for #50

Here it is - after 2 years of submissions I finally make #50

You could say I was panning for gold

Thanks to all your patient input and suggestions along the way. You have all been a big help in my development. I'm afraid to mention names, because I'll probably forget someone. But you guys and gals that have been around here for the past 2 years - thanks! I've sure learned a lot about photography and Photoshop.

For the newbies, here is where I started. In May 2006 I saw two new locomotives go through town. A new SD70M-2 leading a new GE ES44DC (in 2006). I ran out and took a few pictures with a borrowed camera.
Well my best shot was rejected - didn't matter what I though or how significant the occasion was - it was still rejected.
Pick your reasons; backlit, bad cropping, it was a wedgie, and note how close to the tracks I was.
So hang around - it is worth it.

Very nice shot Jim. As I stated in my comment, glad to see that you've been able to use all the advice given to you for a really nice shot. Shall we call you the "Canadian Pan-Master"?

Thanks. Micheal Allen's diagram helped. I kept reminding myself to keep my toes perpendicular to the tracks.

no pan-master yet - still an apprentice.

Great pan shot and photo of the roundhouse!

There's too many trees in the way to get a pan shot in Queensland. What sort of area is 'idea' for such a shot?

Assuming you mean 'ideal'...
Anywhere where you have a background that isn't flat, and a foreground that doesn't block the train.

Six of your most recent seven accepted shots appear to show enough room for a pan. I can't tell for sure, but from the general sense of the topography, I don't see a problem from stepping back a bit, and the shot on the bridge is clearly from far back enough to do a pan.

Maybe those are not from Queensland?

Thanks, me to! That was a quick surprise grab after taking the pan of the CBC VIA.

So quick that the pic starts to blurr just beyond where it is cropped.
I didn't think it would make the database because of where it would be cropped (any opinions to the contrary?) so I now have a decent avatar.
