I'm back, with successful rejects!

And thanks to John Ireland also! Folks, it's been a while since I've been around, and most of you newcomers DON'T know me but I used to be around here A LOT! I don't have many photo's on RP, but hung around here quite a lot. And then I kinda just fell off the face of the earth. Long story short, I was brutally shunned by my immediate family. Months leading up to that point it was horrible, and I just stopped shooting all together. Haven't talked to my friends in ages, haven't posted here in forever, I just stopped living life. Depression set in and gave up everything. Moved in with my fiance Jennifer, and for most of you who know me she's my railfanning buddy and fellow contributer, and everything I guess started to pick back up. I was about to give up photography all together and railfanning too, as I just didn't feel too wonderful about myself. And then, John Ireland messaged me wondering where the heck I've been. That put that in my mind, this is a great community and you guys CARE. Not just someone on the other side of the monitor. So folks, I'm gonna try to be back, and although our shoot yesterday got rejected on here, I like to call these successful rejects, I still got some of my touch, mother nature just didn't want to accept it

I want to appeal that last one, I really like it, the nose is lit but the side is backlit, I still see they haven't fixed that to say sidelit. Thanks again guys, nice to be back.

Welcome back, Ben. FWIW, in the future, don't let others get you down, family or not...it's not worth it. Just my $.02 on that.

Nah, I wouldn't. The sky's blown out pretty bad. I liked your first one the best (too bad Big Blue wasn't in the lead), but for the conditions you were shooting under, you nailed it.

I like the first one... with some adjustment, I bet that could be a "come back" photo.

Welcome back - you're family here on RP.

As far as your three shots - you have to ask yourself; was the light working with me or against me? Some of the best photos on RP are the ones that
manage to capture the effects and interactions of light upon the subject and composition. When the light is not on your side, move to another side to make it work for you, when possible.

Due to the lighting, I'm not a fan of #2 or #3, however, the composition and clarity of #1, despite the overcast day still works for me.

Welcome back, Ben. Put me in the camp of liking the first shot the best. I think that one has the best shot at RP. The third one, I don't see it making it for the aforementioned reason of blown out sky. The first one has a feeling that the other two don't have. The third one is actually my least favorite of the three.

Welcome back. I'm new to the forum but I've been in a similar situation and was able to get my life back on track.

I like the first shot too. Keep up the good work, do what you enjoy doing and don't let anyone tell you differently.

Ben, the second picture looks to be an interesting location with all those chimneys in the background. I would go back there and explore the location a bit when the light is more in your favour.

Ah, Homestead! As most of the railfans around our pittsburgh area, it's a wonderful place to be at any time of the day, morning and evenings are better for photo-ops with the mighty iron tho. I hate to copy the greats of the area but more photo's of this area the better, although it gets shot a lot. BUT, like I said it's a wonderful place to be. Either on the Homestead-Grays bridge (where I was standing with the stacks in the background) shooting either way, facing North(NS)/West(CSX) during the morning or South(NS)/East(CSX) during the evening. Or you can stand trackside by the old station or go towards the burough of munhall, a 1 minute drive from the homestead location and shoot csx going across the Mon River Bridge. I went off on a lecture didn't I? lol
