This is one of those times when you should have clicked the link in the signature. If you had done that, you have seen you're talking down to a photographer light years beyond yourself.

My Take on It.

It doesn't matter what reporting mark is or is not on the engine, what does matter is what the blue card says. The same goes for the Juniata Terminal E8s - these are not PRR units!
I understand your logic Max, but for RP purposes it would be impractical, confusing, and unnecessary. For instance, what would we do about the "Railroad" field for lease units? Do we put in the owner of the track, the current owner of the engine (regardless of paint scheme), or the railroad displayed on the engine? It would be far too confusing for most people to grasp.
|
Really, I am glad that someone finally was able to articulate the issue at hand.
If you use the alleged RP method as promulgated by Max, how would one correctly label this image?

Is the Railroad AT&SF?
Well AT&SF doesn't exist anymore.
Is it BNSF?
Most certainly not, since BNSF never had control over 3751 and everything else in the photo belongs to Amtrak or some other defunct RR like the CB&Q.
Do we use who's track the train is on?
Well the track here is owned by Metrolink and as you can see, there is nothing in the image that even remotely has the word Metrolink on it, let alone any reporting mark that starts "SCAX."
So now what do we call something that is a "non-static display" that belonged to a fallen flag and has never been owned by the succeeding company and is not on a long term lease?
Well for the sake of argument "I" think we should call them FRED.
OMG, I just realized that FRED won't work because that is already taken by the end of train device aka: EOT or FRED!!!
That just won't do, so I have emended my proposal as follows - use the reporting mark "CRAP."
That way everyone can now use the reporting mark "CRAP 3751" for all the new pictures of this engine that we post and the Railroad and be the Crapline.
See, problem solved and I didn't even get bunched boxers.

More on My Continuing Commentary on China.

You know, if this were China the government would tell us what to put in each box and our local cadres would be checking up on us to see if we made any mistakes.
They would also tell us what to take pictures of and how they should be processed so that we may be able to portray the trains (as a product and creation of the State) in the most glorious way possible.
We would also gladly accept the screening process of the central committee and would not bitch and complain and waste valuable work time chatting in Internet forums about images that were not accepted and such.
Oh ya, and there would be no Internet so we could all work harder and for longer making more Happy Meal Toys and such.
It is just my observation that some of us might be happier if others spent more time telling us what to do, and what to say.
That way we would not be burdened with the indecisiveness of free thought.

I love how the argument is pretty much gone and this thread now just consists of discussion about the argument.

LMAO!
This thread is getting to be just as fun as the infamous Conrail B40-8 thread that turned into HLCX SD60 fest.

Gotcha. And just so you know I was agreeing with you on both statements.
I think the real turning point in this thread was John Ryan, which I will give the game shot to. Nothing like being able to plaster someone with factoids like that straight off the dome!
And Max, if you're going to say "For RP purposes", than let me just say this. For RP purposes, we will continue to do what the site owners do themselves, and 97% of everyone else does. Because it makes sense.
That is all.
Alec
P.S. Sooooo, are we all clear on the CSX-CSXT debacle? No? Fantastic.

Its CSXT for crying out loud. CSX would denote a leasing company, which CSX is not. Its Reporting Marks 101.

This is right up there with all the Yamato vs. Iowa discussions I've witnessed (and been dragged into). Fortunately, I can stay out of this one since I don't know jack about the subject matter (and I don't know Jack either).
I will say this though: you railfans are just as wacky as battleship guys are. lol

This reminds me of the "camera in bag sideways" thread from a few years ago.
I think it's well past time to give this one a rest.

I don't know where it is, but the gist of it is that
a) regular contributor says something which, taken slightly out of context or interpreted slightly differently than intended, is completely ridiculous
b) all other contributors pile on and continue to run the joke until the end of time
c) for other reasons regular contributor leaves the forums and joke goes away; joke occasionally referred to as being one of the glory days of the forum

And "I" like pepperoni on mine.
Come to think of it, beer would be nice too.
Perhaps Charles can spring for some Schlitz or some Steele Reserve in the 40 oz. size.

The only way to really know is to look at the blue card, and I doubt you do that for every locomotive you foam. Example, SP 352, an unpatched AC4400CW, shows Southern Pacific on its blue card.
The few BN units running around, still say BN on their blue cards and are OWNED by Burlington Northern.
Max, if you're so concerned about it, go hop on a SOO unit, or GTW, or DMIR, whatever and check out the blue card on it.
