Correct the overexposure and the truth is incontrovertible.
What is interesting is that once you know what the real color is, you don't see the overexposed photo the same way.

Apparently at my son's office today, heated discussions lasting hours occurred regarding this image amongst the photographically ignorant.

I must be color blind and totally ignorant. I see white and gold. I can look at it upside down and in a mirror....the thing is still white and gold. No amount of staring at it or thinking in colder colors will change that.

I saw white and gold- at first. Once I color-corrected it, I just can't see it the same way again.

Great Northern green looks brown (to me) in many photos.
AT&SF blue looks black in many photos.
Do others see the same? Or not?

Those Santa Fe units definitely look blue to me, not even close. But I know what you mean though, some pictures the ATSF units look black to me.

Yup, ATSF black! Interesting.
For a long time, back in the day, I thought the Chessie scheme had black on top, didn't know it was actually blue. I'd see models in the store and wonder, why did they do that? In shots, still generally looks black to me.
Just looked at a number of Chessie shots on RP. Yup, it's black, people, it's black!!!!

I'm with Kevin and see white and brown. I do not see how you could see blue and black.
I also go with the idea it's bad color reproduction and a way overexposed blue and black. Proof has been pictures of the actual blue and black dress.
Still, it has been an interesting topic that brings up the truth that people see differently.
Also we photographers have to be aware that is possible that any of us may have some form of color blindness.

Here's another:

It's actually a B&O blue unit, patched by CNJ. The Kodachrome rendered the CNJ patches as blue, but the B&O paint as black.
Does anyone see the unit as all blue?

Its not stupid at it, its fascinating how one picture could divide the country. Troy is a perfect example! The dress is actually black and blue. I see it as white and gold but the original photo is black and blue.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

The people arguing vehemently about it on social media don't have enough to do.

It boggles my mind that people can look at the middle photo (which is the one that was the center of the debate) and say it looks like either the one on the left (white and gold) or the one on the right (blue and black). And some people were seeing it both ways when they would look at it at different times of the day. W...T...F...

Hi Jim,
Every time I look at it on the same display, it looks the same to me. But I have noticed that on different displays, it can look very different. On my PC....which is a PC, I see white and gold. On my IPAD, it is black and blue.
I will say this. The Retina displays are gorgeous. Wish I could have one on my PC. I don't for one minute want Apple-anything-else, but their displays are nice. Whenever I have a question about whether or not one of my shots looks OK, I preview it on the IPAD. If it looks good there, it is probably OK.

So what do you see when you look at the three individual photos above? I asked someone that the other day and they said all three looked similar, but the brightness was different.
No matter what monitor I view the middle dress on, it looks exactly the same: Light blue and bronze (or blue and olive-brown as SFO777 posted above). I don't see white and gold like the dress on the left, nor do I see blue and black like the dress on the right.

I trust my monitor, and it's telling me to gives no f--k about it. So I am.
The dress is ugly.

Hi Jim,
I just looked again. On my desktop and laptop (both are PCs), I see the crappy white and bronzish that you see in the original image. On my IPAD, the original image is blue and black.
With regard to the three side-by-side images in your last post, I see exactly what you see on the PCs.....and still see exactly what you see on my IPAD. The fact that the center image is not blue and black on the IPAD like the one that started this thread is puzzling to me.
With regard to Lloyd's comment about how ugly the dress might be, my response is that it really depends upon who is wearing it.
