Bad Cropping - Scenery Shots

Gday All

Just got these rejected for Bad Cropping. My idea in these photos was to show as much of the rural countryside as possible, while still having the train prominant in the photograph. What do you all think?

third, nice, less foreground (like you have in four) and less sky

fourth - I don't recall a single mid-train single-car shot on RP, must not be their thing. Put aside?

one: train is centered, apply rule of thirds

two: same thing, plus there is a lot of plain blue sky

First one. Shot WAY too wide. You put a lot of uninteresting space in there. The core of the shot works well. What you have there is the contrast between urban (transit train) and rural (livestock.) I like the concept a lot. It just lost most of it's impact by shooting too wide. I would zoom in by at least half. The transit and the animals are the subject, everything else is an distraction. Get rid of it.

Second one. Forget it.

Third one. Nice, but consider the symmetry. You need to better center the reactor and smokestack, possibly. The opening of the overhead bridge provides what is called a "frame". It frames the shot. These kinds of images are actually an image within an image. See that? There are two images here. You need to square up the image in the framed area, then square up the entire composition. You might have to stand in the road to do that. If that's the case, bring someone with you to watch for cars.

Fourth one. Interesting idea--coal and nuclear. I got it. WAY too much sky, it adds nothing. Again, I don't think the nuclear facility is centered quite as well as it could be. I think you need to be more to the right, maybe. Another thought is to change perspective. Use a wider lens, move in closer to the bridge opening. Not sure how busy the road is--that would greatly influence what I would try there.

Strongest compostion is #1, #3 is good if you refine it a little. Those two show you do have a good creative streak. Keep at it.

I wouldn't be so fast. It has promise. What I'd really like to see is one with MORE foreground, not much, just a smidge of more fence. Then crop off some on the left and some of the sky. I'd be more inclined to work on this shot for a few turns before working on the first one.

Like I said, it has promise, though I can't promise it would make the database. Worth the effort, I would say.

Third one, follow J.'s advice. I like it a lot.

Its not enourmasly detracting, but it doesn't add anything either.
