Appeal the first, I like it.
Let the second go.
Recrop the third taking off some on the top and left. I think If you have any where you are lower and the express is closer that would be better. The dude is almost too disconnected in your picture.

Just my opinon which holds very little weight...
1. rotate slightly CCW.
2. let it go.
3. Is this the mid 80's? Too much emphasis on boring people.

No. 1 - I like it. Appeal it, or wait and resubmit.
No. 2 - Eh, good clean shot but I think you have done it before.
No. 3 - Has potential, turn to the right and only have the two people, no building.
Now back to my beer and the sky on the veranda here in Honolulu.

Because a PEQ doesnt mean a thing with these types of shots. Some screeners just dont want a certain shot on and you probably got the same screener both times.
This one got PEQ'd multiple times when i first submitted, waited a few months and hoped i would get a different screener, and accepted.

Dont go black and white, with things such as rails and spikes they have character aka rust and stuff like that that color really brings out imho.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG
