Cropping Help

Yeah, I know the title's boring, but I really do need help with this one. Thoughts on what to do?

Here you go(attached). It looks like a mainline there in the background. i would wait for the sun to swing over to the other side of the tracks, and get a train going by this thing. Neat looking engine/shot, btw!

I like Daniel's idea pretty well, but I'd include more room above the unit. That smoke stack looks cramped.

Peter, as info, I suspect that the likely cause of the rejection, which Daniel fixed but did not explain, was that there is a blurred "something" in the lower right corner of your shot. Sometimes on a cropping rejection it is due to the presence of something unnoticed and I think that is what has happened with your shot.

I dont see how the light wasnt good enough for a roster on the side facing the tracks. Agreed a train passing it would be the best but there looked to be adequate side light from the shadow the unit is casting.

Yeah, there definitely was, but aside from standing on the ROW, there was no where to get it, because after the ROW on the other side it drops off a good ways to the road, which is pretty busy. If I were to do it again, I would have a different driver who was more comfortable with stopping shortly in the right hand lane for me to get on top. But, I'm not sure if that would be high enough because the tracks of the main may obscure the unit. As for a passing train, I didn't have a lot of time, however, a few minutes later a southbound, but we had already left.

The input quality probably was OK, but it looks like a halo effect was generated due to high-radius sharpening.

I think the downtown scene (which I kinda admire) is seen as "dead space" in this instance.

Yeah, but I still think this is worthy and I'm bummed its been rejected. I'm considering appealing it. What do y'all think?

Of the three crops, I like Daniel's the best; you did yourself no favors by adding more on the left to your 2nd version.

It's a locomotive nose, and half a frame of nothing. That's the best way I can sum it up.

The shot begs to be taken from a different angle. This angle isn't appealing at all.

I don't see a happy outcome. You are just too tight on the engine, which also puts it too far to the right in any reasonable crop. I played around with a 5:4 crop, ditching the left margin, and I saw nothing that worked. Good luck, but I personally don't see a solution.

If anything, I'd try a vertical crop, but as Loyd said, it's not a great angle as all you end up with is the nose. If you could slide over to the right some and take a dreaded 3/4 wedgie with sun from the right side, you'd be good . . . or come back at night and paint it with a spotlight.
