I don't see it that way, Joe. Look at the shadows from the grab irons and such on the nose. The shadows are to the left of the vertical pieces, which means that the sun is coming over the right shoulder of the photographer. As the photographer is on the right side of the tracks, that means the sun is not close to being nose-on.
One can also see sun on the sides of the fuel tanks of the engines, and on part of the trucks.
I think the dark sheen on the sides of the cabs of the first two units is an optical illusion. That looks like sky glint to me, reflections of the medium blue sky in the background, rather than poorly lit sides because of nose-on light.
Also, dead on the nose sun would show more shadow beneath the rail heads.
