Default Irene damage-- at least one iconic shot gone!

Thanks to a heads up from Kevin B, and link to photo evidence-- no kidding, the iconic Bartonsville covered bridge on the Vermont Railway System (VRS) is GONE!!!

I'm at a loss for words. Things weren't all that bad here in the DC metro area. Looks like the predictions of mass flooding for NY/NJ and New England are indeed coming true.

Hope all of our forum members are safe and secure.

BTW, the video runs multiple clips in order. If it pops up with some guy in a wheelchair, look down at the bottom and click on video number 5.

Also hearing from Kevin the Washington County RR (operated by the VRS) has been severed by major structural damage to the bridge at White River Jct. Vermont seems to be taking a big hit from this storm, though there is flooding scattered about from Phildelphia northward. I'm sure we're going to see more flooding damage from Northeastern and New England railroads in the coming days, unfortunately...

BTW, obviously a loss, on the historic register, but what is "VRS" and does this road bridge have any current or past connection to RRs?

VRS = Vermont Railway System. Should have spelled that out in the first place, and corrected in the original post. The Bartonsville covered bridge, while not a railroad structure, was immediately adjacent to a railroad crossing on the VRS' Green Mountain Railroad line, and was pretty much a "must do" shot for anyone visiting the line.

Just now getting another update that every subsidiary line of the VRS has major damage, with some estimated as taking several weeks to restore to service.

Very sad news to hear. I've never seen it except in pictures on this web site --

Damn shame... in today's dollars it would likely cost billions and billions of dollars to rebuild.

Gosh, Mitch, let's no go overboard. It is just a wooden structure, 151 feet long, not a technological miracle. I'd say a half million, less than a million for sure, based on this website (http://www.excelbridge.com/owners/cost.asp) and rounding up. For a few billion you could put a brand new covered bridge in each of the 3000-some counties in the US.

Here is a link to the full report from Kevin B on Trainorders. Non-members can still see thumbnails, which should give an idea of the level of destruction. Kevin, as always, has given a thorough report and his words alone well describe the level of devastation experienced by the VRS:

You'll note one of the comments he makes is "Bartonsville had the bridge insured for $1 million and an exact replica will be built." Pretty good estimating, JRMDC...
