Default Is my monitor off or do I just not know how to process desert photos?

Both of these taken near sunset, I could drop some yellow channel, but above this, I dont know understand the underexposed reject.

I dont know why you didnt go for an actual pacing shot as long as you could... Color looks a little orange but other than that fine.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

The first one is certainly underexposed. The second one may not be as bad, but still seems dark. I'm not sure about the cropping of the first one either. Train seems centered top to bottom and who needs a tight shot of four typical BNSF motors when you could have shot the entire train?

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

I didn't catch that part. Troy, 1/1000 stops action. That's not a pacing shot.

I agree with Max. Why didn't you go for a 1/500 or so pace shot instead of a 1/1000? Now it just looks like it can't decide rather to be a pace shot or an actual wedgie (or half of a wedgie).

The nearest grade crossing was literally 40 miles away (kingman, az). This guy was going 60-70mph and I was doing my best to just keep up with it, I had no opportunity to get far enough in front of it to do that and I was running out of daylight. If it dont work, it dont work...

I thought that at 1/500 it would be a blurry mess. I had one hand on the wheel, one hand on the camera, shooting with a 70-200 being blown around at 70-80mph. It was the best I could do.

If I had a passenger to keep a hand on the wheel, I am sure I could have done much better.

I am gonna look through and see if I have anything with a slower shutter speed, but I put it at 1/1000 because I was concerned about sharpness (which I know kind of flies in the face of the intent of this kind of shot).

I took 3 weeks off in the fall, not a month

This is it for a while. Got a big Yellowstone trip planned in June.

Lucky bastard. Vegas is still one place I haven't been to yet. I've been through Nevada a dozen times, lived in Cali a few years, but still haven't made it to Vegas.

It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

1 to yellow maybe dark to. 2 thats better for color but dark, I think the cropping ok on both but who knows what the fickle finger of framing thinks LOL.

The 3 GE most likely came off a train that was DPUed and the next one thats under powered to pickup or their set out for a train thats having problems with power.

Yes, there is one, sort of. The lead unit hasn't been repainted to replace Santa Fe with BNSF, so it's still in its ATSF paint scheme. Besides, in the reporting marks field he's got it identified as a BNSF unit.

I fixed it for him before he incurred the wrath. Also, FWIW, getting three warbonnet GP60M's on a train in 2011 is pretty cool, just ask this guy!
