Default Top 10 of 09

I know its a little early for this thread, but I figure with 92% of 2009 done with, most should have a pretty good idea of what their top 10 shots this year have been. With that being said, feel free to amend your list is something amazing happens in that last 8%, I know I might have to!

A quick summary of this past year; More than usual, 2009 was a year of change for me. Not only did I upgrade to a new camera system, I also graduate college, commissioned into the U.S. Navy and moved to San Diego to join the crew of the USS Comstock. Knowing that a major shake up was in my future, I spent my last months in Pittsburgh knocking off all those shots I never got around to getting earlier. Overall, I think I was successful in my goal; counting by owner (not locomotive) only one railroad is a repeat in my top ten. Finally, some of these shots are not necessary my best shots, but rather represent a series of shots or a milestone that I consider a major success for 2009 (i.e., four trips to the B&P or my trip out west).

A shot I missed the night before (lack of train) when the clouds in the sky were really cool.

Best part of a poor day. Not a ton of traffic anywhere. Got poor results in Theodore National Park, Montana, and made it all the way to the southern end of the canyon when this started into it. Chased it north all the way to the other end and drove rest of the day and night to the UP mainline at Rawlins, WY.

Planned the day to chase along the Mississippi but caught this roadrailer luckily by luck. I spend the whole day focused on using my 10-22 all day for everyshot on my one body.

Ran out of the house to get this shot and forgot all my rain gear for my gear and myself. Was soaked to the bone shooting in the pouring try to cover my gear the best that I could. Only thing I was thinking about was how I was going to get my truck unstuck that was running behind me. Luckily I got the shot and got unstuck.

End of the day surprise. I just caught this train coming around the bend up the road from this shot. 30 seconds earlier and I would have been off the tracks and driving towards the interstate finding a place to sleep.

I just made it. I had to sprint to the park overlook to catch this train and the setting sun. I was held up at the park enternace and I thought it was going to be all over.

No particular order.

I've only had 22 accepted, excluding scanned slides from way back and pre-2009 shots. I don't know that I have a top anything, but here are a few, along with some narrative. I think of my shots as not being "best" but rather reflecting where I am at any point in time and what I am trying to do, successful or not.

First, part of this year I focused on expanding my compositional range, sometimes into an extreme zone.

2009 was a slow year for me, less than two full pages of new uploads. (Some shots were loaded this year, but taken previously.) 2007 still looks like my best year as fas as greatest hits.

I didn't realize how little I had shot RP-worthy stuff this year. I had to go 19 pages deep into my portfolio here to find ten shots from '09. I guess I need to get out more.

You do know that on your results page, one of the options is sort by date (newest first). Brings all the 2009 shots to the top and makes it a lot easier.

Observe.

I have plenty of 2009 railfanning left, but I think I'm done uploading pics for the year, so I'll play. Seems people have their own little way of interpreting this thread, either by posting their top aesthetic or technical shots, their most viewed shots, or doing a year in review sort of Top 10. I'll go with the most viewed on RP route, since I didn't submit a whole lot this year and several of my Top 10 shots aren't on the site. But overall, I really felt like I had a good year, better than last year for sure although the views don't reflect that. Looking forward to 2010, when I probably won't travel nearly as much, but will simply shoot the lights out of my local line.

This wig-wag will go down as the rarest sight I saw in 09'.

Seeing the 4449 in action was a blast, as it's by far my favorite steamer. Too bad people were so burned out on it by the end of its run, or I would have posted a couple more shots of it.

This shot is not even possible anymore. I made an impromptu run to Montana to see it before this scene got changed forever.

You don't see many shots from this location. This day was the most tiring day of railfanning I've ever had with a total of 8 hours of hiking involved.

I've always wanted the chance to shoot here.

Another trip I took because I wanted to capture something before it went away was when I hit the Feather River Canyon while it still got a decent amount of trains. A timely (for me) derailment meant that I had a very busy visit.

In my opinion, my top shot period of 09'. And to think I almost passed on it in favor of a shot that would have been far inferior!

I came, I saw, I shot. Just a few hours later and I was chasing the 4449, but this was the most interesting shot of that entire trip.

Just a little shooting around from early in the year.

Just a nicely lit shot from a pretty common angle. The warbonnet is a nice bonus, with the green hills.

And that's my RP 2009 for you!

Neat thread! 2009 was definitely my most successful year of railfanning/photography. I purchased my SLR last December so all of my shots that were submitted this year, have been taken with it. So far this year, I've had 254 photos accepted.

First excellent work folks nice seeing the different shots.

Well I had a pretty busy year so I picked out my top 10....based both on my favorites and how many viewed.....

This was on a cold January morning (yes it gets cold here too) of FEC train 226 reflecting in the tidewater at St. Augustine. Those who follow my pictures see alot taken here. This was a pretty routine shot that I liked.

This was on Inauguration Eve. I wanted to document how the Washington Metro essentially saved the day during the historic event. This was tough to get in and forum members and Cris Kilroy personally helped me. The shot was taken near 10 PM and you can see how crowded it is.

Image © Bob Pickering (BP)

In St. Augustine again I decided to try something different by just catching the nose of the leading motor with the rest of the train winding through in the distance.

This is what I would call my luckiest train catch of the year. I did not know it was coming and I just happened to hear it on my radio. I gave chase with my jeep flirting with that yellow light that says E just making it to New Smyrna Beach to catch the very first ARES rocket parts being delivered by the FEC. I never would have had a chance to make that up.

Stuart is one of my favorite places and again the train gods saved me after getting up at 3:00 AM a bank of clouds were moving in from the Atlantic and the train JUST got there....

Back in St. Augustine I really like this SD70M-2 - GP40-2 combo. The light was just perfect.

Florida is NOT Flat. I really like this one and this is also one of those railroads that usually only sees 3-5 car trains. This was a storage move and KDA gave me heads up so I could see it.

One of my all time favorite shots of the year FEC train 101 in a raging thunderstorm. Lightning was raging around me and it was raining at a rate of 2 inches per hour. Plus this was the first time I caught to Rail America motors on a train. I pulled up, rolled my window down and pointed my camera and the train was literally right there. LUCKY!

Back to Stuart had thunderstorms north, south and west and a patch of sun right where I wanted it.

This was a shot I been wanted to get for years and the funny thing is that this is only 20 minutes from my house. But they do not go down this branch lines at good times and or the times they go it is back lit. But finally the train gods giveth back. Even in cloudy conditions the scene was enough to impress a screener and there it is.

There are so many other pictures as I was quite busy but those for not are my favs for 2009.

Of course if I did this again I would likely pick another 10

Here are mine in no particular order, which included some shots and some railroads that I have wanted to get for a while.

I counted them from most popular of the year.

Former RTEX 4995, full information elsewhere, attainable after this "Criminal Minds" rerun ends. Most people, myself included, keep calling it a GP38-2.

I posted 4 originally. But I found one other one I like from 2009. I like the rural - small town feel to this one:

Here is a top four. Besides a few times this spring I havent really photographed any trains. I have spent the majority of my time photographing other subjects.

In all, 2009 was a pretty good year for me. It was the first full year that I've used my Canon XSi, so I've seen a great increase in the quality of my work. Although budget limitations prevented me from going outside of day trip range this year, I managed to cover a lot of ground in my area. I spent a lot more time focusing on the more obscure operations of this region instead of spending all of my time along high traffic but relatively boring main lines. So far I have 39 images from '09 accepted here.

Here are my ten favorites sorted by date. For all the fair weather railfans out there, note that only three of these shots are taken in full sun--just proof that you don't need to have sun to get a decent photo. Although ordinary cloudy days don't do much for me, throw in some snow or fall foliage and I'm happy. The lack of sun allows for more flexibility as it permits me to shoot from angles that would not be possible in sunny conditions.
