Camera Ideas

Looking to get a new Canon camera soon with in the next two months or so, what do you guys suggest? looking to get a Rebel or higher. The main thing im looking for is something that wont put a red halo around the headlights in low light times. My current camera does that with most night shots with lights pointing at the camera and ruins the shot.

Anything newer than a Rebel XT is fine, and don't shoot with filters when there isn't much light.

ok, i dont have any filters done plan on any for a while even though they do help every now and then.

A 1D Mark IV is major overkill. We're talking entry level cameras here!

I would personally recommend you start with a Rebel so that you could invest the extra $$ into good lenses. I would buy the T2i body only and save the $100 from the 18-55mm kit lens, spending it instead on the 50mm f/1.8 prime (forget about the kit lens, it's not going to do the 18 MP sensor any favors). Note that the T2i is currently backordered from Amazon; wait until it comes in and you'll get it for $799 rather than what's currently shown:

For zoom lenses, I'm no expert, but I can say that I hear the following two are some of the better lenses for serious Canon users:

Both the T1i and T2i do videos. Also note that the T1i has the updated (improved) version of the 50D sensor, and the T2i has a varient of the 7D sensor. Can't say I'd recommend the 50D to a pure beginner, as there are simply newer (and better) alternatives.

Yea was thinking so but didn't want some one to get one thinking it did. 50D is a great camera 7D better then the 50 D is. I sold my 30D to cheep and now without a back up so plans are to get a 7D at some point down the road. But needs don't out weight cost yet

Now that the T2i is out you may get a good clearance price on a T1i and have money to spend on a better quality lens. (There are good reasons why people say "spend the money on the lens".)

This night shot was taken with a T1i and a Sigma 17-70mm lens (This Sigma lens is known to have focusing issues - otherwise it is a great lens for the price. I had mine re-calibrated under while warranty.)

Might as well skip the rebel and go for something bigger. A used 30D or 40D...or a new 50D. Throw in a 70-200 f/4L and something wider and you'll be all set.

I'd go for either the T2i or the 50D. Those will be decent starter cameras that will produce some good images.

I see recommendations for the 28-135 from time to time and it always seems odd. Or at least it is odd that the recommender usually does not point out that this lens is not at all wide on a cropped sensor body like those under discussion here. I personally thing that, regardless of its optical qualities, it is a poor starter lens for a crop body, and especially for train shooters, who tend to like to shoot things that are looooong and do well with a wiiiide lens at times. Make sure you have a lens that goes down to about 17mm.

Gosh, Chase, "decent" and "some good images"? Maybe I am misreading your tone but this seems like a pretty weak recommendation as well as inaccurate. I think the truth is closer to a statement that neither camera will hold you back in any way in terms of image quality in excellent to decent to pretty far below decent levels of light. Paired with good glass they will produce outstanding results in most lighting situations and (merely!) good to very good results in all. DSLRs are just plain excellent these days, and certainly so for a starter camera.

As an extension of that opinion, put me squarely in the camp that says use your money on glass instead of on, in particular, spending more to get a 7D.

I have no complaints, whatsoever from my Rebel or my 7D! They're both great cameras and from what I've gathered with the recently purchased 7D, it'll be just as good as the Rebel, as far as dependability and battery life.

Overall, as you said, you can't go wrong with a DSLR. Perhaps if you perhaps a Nikon one, but that'a aside from the point.

I was just wondering why you said the 50D was a starter camera. I have seen many pros who make a very good living using the 50D as their main camera. It is definitely not a starter camera.

Hmm. Wow. Let me think: I wonder if I take photography seriously at all sometimes. I just went to school for it, worked at the biggest TV station in South Carolina at it, won a couple of awards with it..... Yeah, Chase, maybe you do take photography mroe seriously than I do.

Or maybe not everyone can afford a 7D before or after they buy their first car.
