Default Norfolk Southern TV Commercial

I don't know IF anyone has commented on this previously, but yesterday (08/14) I caught a NS commercial on CNN--quite a surprise. Since I'm not a regular watcher of CNN, I don't know how many different "versions" of commercials NS is running. This one featured a none to subtle message of NS being an "alternative" to the gasoline costs 'crisis' (showed a series of animated gas cans and an NS freight 'fitting the bill'). Don't know if anyone has copied this commercial to their VCR for posting on RailVideos (or whether RailVideos would allow such an posting), but this is the first time I can recall seeing ANY Class 1 RR advertising here in the Northeast. Not even our local MetroNorth commuter RR bothers to attempt to woo drivers off I-95 gridlock. I'm interested if viewers of this forum think this commercial could be, and is, an effective advertising medium.

The specific commercial you mention has been around for awhile. The Media section of nscorp.com features a commercials section which has various videos including a 'The Making of...'.

I take it your just referring to video ads because CSXT has been running print advertisement in the USA Today and other major newspapers. They also refer to the gas savings of trains.

Default Thank You For The NS URL PLEzero

I had visited the NS website prior to starting this thread, but somehow missed the webpage for your URL. NS labels the particular commericial that I saw as the “Lonely Gallon” Television Commercial (2007)"; so if the 2007 date is when it first hit the airwaves, it sure has been around a while. Seeing it a 2nd time, and with the music that the producers chose, my own tastes label this as "cute", i. e., somewhat geared to children in the viewing audience rather than the shakers and movers at corporate HQs type places where the real world economically based decisions get made.

Running a commercial like that won't make a CEO at a major company decide to suddenly start shipping with NS at breakfast one morning, but, it does look good from PR standpoint.

It definitely looked better clean in 2007.

My guess would be that NS tried to clean the engine a little before filming.

That might explain why UP doesn't do commercials, that might actually make them clean an engine, horrors.

Default Reply Re UP YouTube Commercial

Thanks once again PLEzero for the URL for the UP “commercial” on YouTube (not seen that before).

For my tastes they sure laid it on thick and heavy; almost overwhelmed me with tears of joy that such CORPORATIONS exist for the betterment of humanity; altruism at its best. I guess to show my appreciation, from now on, every time I see a UP consist I will just have to stand up & salute (good thing I live in New England where UP is few and far between).

Looking deeper into this, anybody wonder if the UP executives who approved it are suffering from some kind of a corporate inferiority complex? It certainly sounded to me that they want “us” to love “them”; UP execs feel “unloved”???? In addition to Operation Lifesaver, is there a need for a “Hug A UP Exec” program?
