If you go to NJ, take the hour ride to the east down I-195 to Alaire State Park and take a look at the trains their. They are narrow gauge and I remember as a kid they had a few steamers there. That was 25+ years ago but if I recall they were in the process of rebuilding a few before I left Jersey in '04. AB and that crowd might have some better knowledge on that since they live over that way.

1) DM&IR (I pretty much failed with this one...)
2) W&LE
3) LVRR (I've fanned them before, but with a Nikon CoolPix 2100...fail)
4) Rio Grande Scenic
5) KYLE and/or Rock & Rail

They have a few steamers and run them on the weekends. There is also a wide array of other non-operational locomotives, some steam, that await restoration in their yard.

5. Czech Republic, which is cheating a little as I have passed though; but it really needs further investigation, especially this diesel class

Now, these are just the 5 shortlines that I can realistically see this year. I'd love to shoot the I&O, UP, BNSF, CN, DCON (spinoff of ADBF), Minnesota Commercial, Metra, (what's left of the) EJ&E, Grand Elk (comes along with Michigan Southern), W&LE, Ohio Central, Ann Arbor and many, many more.

What are yours?
I have a small correction which I blame on both the BR&W and W&W owners. The second shot is actually of a spot on the Winchester & Western line. BDRV 9581 is on loan to the W&W, who did some work on the engine, while the BR&W owners find a use for it. Yes, I know its confusing...they had me running around like crazy when it was first delivered.

In no particular order:

I'd like to visit a few railroads that started with steam, exist today and kept thier name, and have existing steam which is still active and formerly ran for that line (aside from, or including UP, CP and CN).

Lancaster and Chester (NH&I #40)
Lake Superior & Ishpeming (OC #33)
Great Western (Strasburg #90)

Are there more, I think a few may have escaped my memory.
/Mitch

Edit:
Soo line may qualify.

Amazing - put them on my list!

Built by Alco Brooks Works #61850, August 1920, as an oil burner, for Portland, Astoria & Pacific #101. Sold May 1922 to Minarets & Western (California logging RR), then sold Nov. 1935 to dealer Birmingham Rail & Locomotive, resold to Aberdeen & Rockfish (North Carolina), arriving Dec. 1935 and becoming A&R #40, converted to coal burning. Retired 1952, stored indoors until sold to Valley RR 1977. In service VRR since 1977.

Andrew beat me to it about the A&R. How many steam engines out there are still operating as a #40?

As for the Carolina Southern, get here as soon as you can. They've only got two F units left and now they're running with three GP38-s that were rebuilt by the G&O shops and are basic black.

Still want to fan the BR&W, regardless of where the second shot was taken!

Speaking of Andrew and the BR&W - there's #60, due to run this year which is former Great Western, a railroad still hauling freight under it's original name in CO. That would be in addition to the above mentioned #90 at Strasburg, also former GW.

And really just about any shortline that has not been swallowed up by Genesee & Wyoming, RailAmerica, etc.
