Foamstons not that bad lightwise in the winter, though you will never get light on NB's. The main reason I dont go anymore is that once you have shot one CSX widecab going by the platform/main street, youve shot them all, its even more bland now since some genius decided to cut down the oak trees in front of the depot. im sure it was alot more fun in the days of the leaser lashups and all that but the as stated above, there's a reason I avoid CSX like the plague now. That being said I never did get the bridge shot.
As for the shot itself, its not that hard to solve, you can blame the location for the terrible composition, steps to not fail: Stand on the other side of the pole, shoot the train not the foamer standing in the road, and you got yourself a decent shot.
The original CSX SD50 shot is not that bad, crop some off the top and bottom so it is the correct aspect ration and it has a good chance.

I dont understand why you didnt try to work the station into your shot... If you stand near that grade crossing you can frame the station and not get any of the crossing equipment, road, signal box and other clutter in the way. Looks like you are standing right in front of the railfan platform or bathroom. That's not a very good place to get anything but a boring wedgie. Unless that's what you are after.

I dont think this is going to get on because of high sun too. Might let it go.

The third one is blurry and suffers from high sun. Same with the Amtrak shot you just posted. However, If you could get better lighting at this location you would have a shot at getting one accepted.

How come those train-mounted flags aren't blowing in the wind as the train moves along?

- Poor Lighting (High Sun): The angle of the sunlight is too high, a common problem in the summer months of year on mid-day shots

http://www.railpictures.net/viewreje...&key=870131672

- Poor lighting (Cloudy): Common angle cloudy day shots of common/standard power are generally not accepted.

Yep. Washed out sky, a grey tint to the black paint, not enough sun on the trucks and an unneeded watermark, too.

When I see photos like this, it really makes me feel sorry for the screeners.

All joking aside, would it be too hard for you take a look at what is accepted, then compare it to your rejections? That would give you an idea on what you need to do to get yours accepted.

This picture is evidence that screeners sometimes reject a photo without looking at anything more than the thumbnail.

Why did you even submit that? Did you miss Loyd's response to it when you posted it earlier in the thread?

EDIT - after clicking the viewing the full size version - the image quality is horrible, and it's way out of focus. Certainly put this one away.

Just wanted to see what the would reject for, I admit many things are wrong with that photo.

I think this one has to much clutter?

Yes, and it's also backlit with distracting shadows.

This one has a little more potential. Maybe if you waited a second or two and got rid of all the dead space on the left you'd be on to something.

I wouldn't necessarily call it backlit, but more or less bad angle to the train in relation to the sun's angle. If he had taken quite a few steps to the right and focused more on a broader side shot, less of the dark side of the nose would have been emphasized. There are shots added nearly every day with a similar sun angle, but the photographers were more aware to stand at a broader angle to the train to put less emphasis on the shaded nose.

It's not a bad shot by any means, he just needs to be more aware of shadow angles when composing a shot.
