It was Rejected for PEQ, but is There still a Chance of Getting it On?

Hello again,

I got this rejected for PEQ:

Can anybody help me explain why this was a PEQ? I would have though it was railroad-related, but I guess not?

Yes, I see the crossing gate in the background Honestly, someone that doesn't know has to be able to look at these and be able to tell that they are locomotive prime movers. To a non-railfan, railroader, etc., they could just be big a$$ motors for big a$$ Tonka trucks, a big boat motor, etc. "MAYBE" if there were CSXT somethings or other in the photo with these, put that would still be a long shot.

I would file them away in you personal collection and know that you have photos of something (the associated story) that very few others probably have.

I agree with Kevin; don't forget that EMD 645s, the prime mover in the SD40-2 series, are a mainstay of the marine industry.

Beyond the "is it clearly a railroad photo?" factor, you also took this shot during high sun (EXIF: 12:59pm) -- the shadows and flat light would kill this for RP purposes.

True, but ... maybe the exception proves the rule?

Chris did indeed make it work. He has a solid composition, a main element and complementary secondary elements, no distracting elements, nice color and decent light, or at least is processed well given the light it had.

The rejected shot in this thread has tons of boring empty space, is a shot more about trailers than engines, has hash mid-day light, and lots of distracting elements. It looks like the photographer ran across the scene and grabbed a snapshot.

Really well done shots photographically have a much, much better shot of stretching the screener's limits and avoiding the PEQ.

True, but the fact that they are on the ground and setting on ties, gives a hint that they are loco motors in a railroad bone yard. In fact, one of the ties still has a tie plate on it.

Composition on the first one is poor IMO. Clutter, empty space, what am I supposed to be looking at?

It might look cooler at night. Maybe! That pole in the middle kinda throws it off (in my opinion).
