Far from the generic - both composition and subject.

So odd what slips through as mediocre vs which mediocre shots get well received...

While interesting, I am sorry but I can't see where this is exceptional as a photograph.

I also don't see how this lead locomotive make this so.

As I stated - perhaps a stretch to say exceptional but certainly interesting and well composed (aka; overlooked). And in a world of wide cabs, the second generation power is a nice prize - especially on a class one railroad.

Take note of the plethora of arches, dips and grades at various complimentary angles. Far more interesting then the wave of generic wedges that oddly stood on par with this image, reasons unknown.

Sean - that is a nice shot. I think, for me... actually, I think I just plain missed it, but at first glance I subtracted points when I saw the rear of the train cut off but it works, and the "cut" is done well - is that a flat car out of view or is there actually something there "naturally" cutting off the rear of the train?

Mitch... You know, that's a really good question....

The only other photos of the consist I have published right now don't shed much light. I think it might have been a flatcar but right about there is were the forest begins as well.

For the most part, I tried to avoid shooting the end of the consist as we had a coach coupled to the back of the caboose and in my opinion it kind of wrecked the look.

*edit.... found another photo someone else took from the event. It was a flatcar.

Exactly. Not exceptional. A GP30 carbody does not just automatically make something great

Perhaps verse exceptional, the theme here, like above with Nick's shot, is unique yet not as well revered as the generic shots submitted from the same areas:

I like the take on the location - the intersection of the highway, rail and barbed wire fence and the idea of featuring the power way to the right to balance the scene. And mid-train helpers, no less!

Apart from the compositional lines, I think the fact that the mid-train helpers are yellow helps to make them really stand out and draws the eye.

"Eight" - favorites and under 500 views, really?

Let me guess.... up against the FB link or 3 wrecks and a Heritage unit?

While browsing RP, sometimes I leave a few pages open prior to commenting and "sealing the deal", lol. I guess that's why FB does so well with "Likes". Would be nice on RP, too - so long as they omit the damn "Dislikes" they implemented along side.

Anyway - for your consideration:

So this was his just before, the one above. Without judging either, The curiosity for me is how you go from A to B in processing photos. Mitch can be really bummed as this has 2500 views and 3 favorites(smile).

I would note that I partially judge how much FB participation by the number of likes since if you view from FB without and account(or maybe with one) you can't favorite it.

It's a fine shot but doesn't do anything special for me. Not really a glint shot per se, and lots of dark dead space (height). There's lots of stuff everyday that doesn't get the views I would expect.

Oh, and there's no reason that image needs to be in a 13:10 ratio. 3:2 works just fine.

Lester's shot is the "big foot in the woods" shot - some of you are looking at the woods, I was looking at the prize. Love the light - and the thought to "see" the opportunity for the shot at last light.

As for "there are better", to each his own, yet, I never suggested this was the best shot on all of RP - only that it caught my eye and to met the criteria of this thread, that being, I would argue, a disproportional number of views and "favorites" /comments in regards to the uniqueness /appeal of the image. I don't otherwise search for these shots - rather, I created this thread for similar images that seemingly slipped under the radar (or under 2,895 linked views, wrecks, heritage or Darwin candidates).

As for A vs B processing - I dunno, maybe that one image was from 2011 and the other from 2017. I didn't add the B shot to this thread, lol.

Mitch, just kidding you, and I did not comment pos or neg but rather just talking about images and the "contrast" of the two submitted back to back. The difference in processing of the two struck me and I put my 2 cents in.
The difference in number of views also struck me and is somewhat an indication of what draws views???

Viewership on the site seems to vary considerably from week to week. There are weeks when a decent pic can pull 900-1000 views in 24 hrs, without any campaigns or home page exposure, and other weeks when similar shots will struggle to pull 500-600 views.

In my view, campaigns have taken a lot of the fun out of what used to be a daily photo contest here. They have also taught me a lot about how some photographers think.

I'd love the "prize" more if there were less woods. You are the one who mentioned "a little tall" to begin with, so I just follow up on it (agreeing with you).

I'd like the shot more were the background hill given a touch of the shadow tool. There is some texture there that would work better for me than almost total darkness. Still, I don't see any processing that would move it up from my "nice" category to my "notable" or"excellent" categories.

Most of my 611 shots from last year struggled to get 500 views the first day, and I got a lot of compliments from photographers I respect. Here 6 months later most still under 1000 total views.
