Recalling my recent "heads-up" on some of Georg's overlooked shots last week, I thought this might be an interesting "gallery" /heads up thread for images less then a week old that seemed to have slipped under the radar:

Exceptional = not typical.

Overlooked = slow moving /few comments /favorites after a few hours, days or a week. Judgement call here -I suppose, if there are other images posted at about the same time which "take off" then the photo in question would apply.

Glow on the metal, interesting and unusual curves, interesting patterns in the reflections in the dark metal, overall bright curvy triangular shape vs dark background, this one's a winner for me, in a category that doesn't do well on RP.

Yet you neither favorited it, nor commented.

That in itself seems odd, but even more so, without "payment" or "confirmation" by way of such, it is possible that seemingly poorly received categories might in fact do very well on RP - just no one knows it and consequently, many are likely to perceive that there is no reason to bother posting such images.

I like the shot, but likely due to an illusion, it looks unlevel. And such an odd place to put the crease - off center and unsymmetrical.

I not only left a lengthy comment, much longer than my typical comment, but put it in my "Engine Details" album. You are just impatient. Or forgetful of just how long the comment acceptance delays can be on RP.

The crease is placed off center to make the point on center. Oddly, the painters did not place the point on the crease. Perhaps the crease is not the actual front center of the engine.

Well then... OK! Figured it had been over 24 hours, and maybe even it was.

As for symmetry, I guess it was just easier to fabricate it that way. Cropping, the right headlight on the top of the unit is higher then the left one - this despite the number board appearing level.

If this appeared on a non-rail website, 99.9% of viewers would be thinking "What the heck is it?"

I've faved a number of Jean-Marc's images, but this one doesn't impress.

I am fully aware that I am a bigger fan of this sort of shot than most.

I would love to do more of this myself but I just don't get that sort of access often enough, and when I do I sometimes forget, I get too focused on something else.

Aargh! I confused my lengthy forum entry with my one-word comment! I did them around the same time. No, that's not right, I did the forum comment only after Mitch saw my earlier forum entry. I don't know what I was thinking ... OK, I was lazy at the time I left the comment.

That still doesn't explain why you didn't favor it. When you leave a comment, you actually have to deselect the favorite box, so you must not have been THAT lazy.

I have always de-favorited my commented shots. I use the system as a categorization. My top rank consists of shots on which I comment. My second rank consists of those I have favorited. I would prefer that the default be changed.

Yeah, I've always wondered why a comment defaults to a shot being favorited. Not everyone comments on a photo they love. There should be no connection, IMO.

But anyway, back to the thread topic. How this shot did not get a screener's choice is baffling. This is outstanding:

Subject matter/perfect placement, composition, lighting, texture, b & w, etc.

edit: Just had another thought. I would definitely classify Eric's shot as "Fine Art."

I wonder why black and white, as the color is typically gorgeous at this time of day (unless the river is running muddy).
It is a very, very lucky shot, as anything larger than a tug with barges on the Hudson is a lucky catch.

Eric is one of the best rail photographers in the world.

His imagination and impeccable design sense consistently creates outstanding images that transcend mere rail photography and pass into art.

I think this one is perhaps the best he has ever done.

I understand this may be too far from traditional train pictures and too abstract for much of the RP audience.

But for guys who do enjoy images that go way beyond the normal and stretch our ability to see the world and our favorite subject, Eric's work is nirvana.

I fully agree with this statement. I got to meet him earlier this year and he is also very cool in person. Had a nice convo with him after his show at Summerail.

Kevin is a excellent photographer who has made calendar-quality images for years.

This shot, however, is a significant break-out for him in style.

And I applaud him for it alongside many, many others.

He obviously expanded the dynamic range of his Nikon. However, I think only as much as he needed to.

It's no secret I go for creative interpretations. Therefore I don't so much care for photographic truth when it comes to train pictures. All I care about really is what does it look like.

And this one I like what it looks like a lot.

Except it's not HDR. He probably just pushed the shadow/highlights tool a bit. It's well done and looks fantastic.

Georg Trüb's "duds" according to RP... make that, RP's audience:

I like steam and HSR, but I can still appreciate a good diesel shot - and I'm happy to "pay" a comment for such.

What amazes me most - lol, it's not all about the bass... apparently, it's all about the timing of the post for these two beautiful shots as of 12-27-2014 have yet to break "2" in the favorite threshold and only my own comments to date. Amazing when you consider what can be found with much higher implied appeal on RP.

A shot with no comments and few favorites implies a photo with no appeal - is that the message we want to send for images like these?

Maybe it IS time to bring back the "Like" button, sans the "Dislike". The "like" can be for all of those who might not call a photo a favorite but can appreciate the effort and appeal of a shot.

In the mean time, if you like to see photos as such, and appreciate the efforts and time necessary to post to RP, now's a good time to say!
