First one: always tough to make an interesting shot of a person facing away from you who is not in the middle of a meaningful activity. In the image he is just standing there, I presume thinking about what to do, but as a result there is no action.
Second: it's fine with me; maybe for RP purposes make the monument a bit smaller (yes, I know, it is big so one can read it)

That first shot is so dark I didn't even realize there was someone in the photo until J mentioned it. I thought it was just a shot of the end of a covered hopper on a little used spur.
The second shot almost works really well. I would crop some off the left side (or reshoot it) so that the tree ends the fame. It distracts me to see a litte piece of train on that side. My first reaction was to also say let the first engine come from behind the tree all the way and not cut it off like you did. But then it looks like it will get obstructed behind the branches. If you can reshoot this scene and reposition yourself to get the whole lead engine and to cut the train off the left side of the frame, I say you have a winner.
thank you guys, i was trying to go for the People aspect but was really dark so didnt quite work. i will crop that photo a little different and retry it, also i will go re-shoot it one of these days and trim some branches off the tree
