Default Sometimes You Get the Bear...

And sometimes he gets you.

Saturday, after checking the forecast for what would be an absolutely gorgeous day, I headed south to meet up with a good friend of mine in Somerset for a day of shooting on the 2nd District (yes, again). NS was running trains like crazy, but nothing with exceptional power...well, so I thought. Anyway, I left the house at 0600 and after a stop for gas, a greasy egg sandwich, and a Dr. Pepper (breakfast of champions ) I was on my way to Somerset. It was amazing that there was no traffic on US 27, but then again, I wasn't in a hurry either...

I meet Andy in Somerset and we head south, knowing that 161 and 40J are stopped at Cumberland Falls and will be there for a while. This gives us a chance to get ahead of them and find a suitable location to shoot. There's a bridge about a mile or so north of the signal at Revelo which we deem acceptable for a shot of 161.

40J is right behind them, and we head to the signals at Revelo to shoot it. My shot choice was well compose, yet poorly lit for the time of day. I may have to try it again earlier if the sun is right. Again, we head south for more shots. Failing to catch it at Ratliff (no time to set up), we go to Helenwood for a shot.

With several more southbounds coming, we decide to head up the road a little ways, missing 197 on the way (it was a catfish, so that wasn't a big loss). There's a 913 coming, and we head to Oneida to find a suitable shot for it. I thought this one had some overly acceptable power on it due to the amount of noise on the radio, but when it came around the curve by the Oneida Park...

I heard them come into Danville, and was wondering what the number was (lots of engine noise on the radio), as well as what they were hauling. It's always cool to see a loaded rail train wrapped around a curve like that.

It's back to Revelo for the next catchable train, which was 133. I knew this one had a catfish, but was mildly surprised to find it repainted into the new scheme.

We also saw 124 and 264 which we thought were the last trains for a while. Here's where the bear part comes in. We decided to check out some stuff out down the K&T Railway and walked down about 3 miles. During this time, 175 passed. I didn't know it until I got back home, but it was running with a BNSF GP39M , a rare sight around here. Needless to say, we missed it. Ah well, that's how it goes sometimes.
