How to Crop

I tried at at least four different crops on this shot with no success. Cropping suggestions welcome.

Hey Randy...from what little experience I have in these matters....the train is too far in the distance...too much foreground (RR track) Do you have a different image of the same train, but closer to you....with the locomotives nearer the bottom of the frame?

Ditto...ditto...ditto for the cropping. But, if you get the cropping down, looks like you may get nailed with backlit. Great location. Is the sun ever over your shoulder there? I'd love to see some photos in those circumstances.

Yep, crop way down. Check the database for other pictures of the area and see how they are cropped.

Thanks for the replies. I'll be shooting there again, but that much snow on Cajon Pass is rare. I liked the over all grandeur of the snowy pass. The train is a bonus.

I think the extreme crop you're all suggesting may be too much even at 12mp. I may have another image from that day, but I think I liked this on the best.

Randy, that's an amazing shot, and i like the light on the nose and strong shadows to the right. This is how I personally would try the crop. The loco is near the lower left third "point", there's some interest on the far right with that snow-covered road, and there enough blue along the top that it's not just a mass of white cloud.

Again, outstanding shot!

Nick's comments and suggested crop are dead on, in my opinion. There's just too much empty track in your original shot for the screeners. If you don't have a shot with the train closer, copy Nick's crop, which should be possible on a 12 MP, and it should have no problem getting on.
