Default Cass Railfan Weekend Update!

We continue to upgrade Railfan Weekend so you will have a new and different experience. The final plans are in place for an exceptional event. Thanks go to John Smith, President of the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad, who has done it for us again. Friday’s diesel trip out of Elkins will have the regular Passenger Train with heavy weight coaches. In addition we will feature a Coal Train pulled by multiple vintage diesel units, with several runbys at Woodrow and the High Trestle over the Cheat River. This trip will include a stop at High Falls and a cold cut lunch buffet for your convenience.
On Saturday you will experience for the first time ever, a "Steam and Diesel Coal Train." This train, pulled by vintage Western Maryland painted diesels, will have over 20 coal hopper cars and a caboose. And, we will be using Shay 6 as the helper engine, re-creating a scene that only could have happened more than 50 years ago during the steam to diesel transition. You will be able to photograph this historic event on Spruce curve with multiple runbys. This is in addition to the Log Train and other geared locomotives that will be there, to further experience those by-gone and exciting times. Saturday will include a trip to the Big Cut, as well as down river locations for the runbys. Lunch will be served on the mountain.
The Friday evening program in the Cass Locomotive Shop will include a slide presentation featuring photos of Cass in the 1960s.
Saturday evening activities will include the Loggers Dinner; first seating at 5:00 PM (separate tickets, $12.00 prepaid). There will be shop and museum tours. The Whistle Blow starts at 5:30 PM; the Town Walking Tour at 7:00 PM, and our featured Night Photo Session (this year at the water tank) at 8:30 PM.
Sunday will feature multiple run-bys in Cass. Then, our passenger and log trains will make their way, including several photo runbys, up the lower half of the Cheat Mountain to Whittaker Camp One, where lunch will be served. We will return to Cass by about 2 PM to permit those who need to leave early to depart for a safe trip home.
If you decide to attend, we want you to have the best experience possible. We will always honor you as a loyal supporter of the Mountain State organization and the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park.
