high sun angle rejection

I know its common power and common angle but the shot was taken at speed truck was doing 45 as was the train. Also shot was taken around 3pm in May so not sure how the sun angle was to high. Though suggestions comments all welcome

You're getting hit exactly where I myself used to confused by the high sun issue... there a couple things to note, all of which are affecting your image...

1) From late May to early August (approximately), 15:00 is probably too close to Noon (or 13:00 for Daylight Savings Time) to get an attractive sun angle.

2) Sometimes, even 08:00 on December 21 will give you bad shadows if the train is aligned wrong to the sun.

3) The trucks are in shadow, the radiator is casting a shadow, and even the visor on the cab is casting a shadow on the side of the locomotive here. Also, there is a distinct difference between the nice sun on the nose and the badly angled sun on the side of the train.

It's 100% a shot that I would have taken myself and would be happy to have... it just won't get past the rule it is trying to break for RP.

Chased a train or two on Rt 7 in my day... I know from where you speak!

I make a trip out there at least once a year for a mix of train chasing and back road spirited driving

You might have had more luck if you had slowed the shutter speed and done an actual pace shot. There's nothing here that shows you took it while in a moving truck, it could have easily been done just standing trackside, so it's basically like you said, common power at a common angle.

You can look and see the rail is not lit, the shadows on the radiator and under the cab window scream high sun

that's why i still take photos of trains. the chase and getting good to me high quality shots given conditions we didn't pick how the rails got laid.
