Default Backlighting - good or bad?

I basically grew up on a diet of backlighting, shooting steam in South Africa, and even though I've adapted over the years to shooting diesel & electric traction with light on the nose, I just cannot get my head around RP's take on backlighting

Good example, this rejection, taken about 25 min after sunrise, which I decided to convert to B&W because the light had lost it's orange glow.

Any thoughts on this one and backlighting in general?
