Agreed, and I have no problem with the new shot, different angle. Just wondering if that was something remembered by the screener, since I remembered it.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

I'm thinking it was a slip of the keys, or a rejection for some odd reason I would not fathom to guess.
As for similar - there are 5 shots from New Hope at Hood in the snow all submitted within a week of each other last year, same train, same location, same side, same weather, same time of day and same perspective. And there are even more identical photos from Cresco with CN #3254. And then there are the images from Lloyd and Chase. So - the only way to legitimately reject one for similar is that it is in fact "similar" which is not allowed as opposed to identical which apparently is allowed.
As for the shot - I've been after it for some time - seems due to the angle of the light and the distortion from heat waves, December is the only time to get it. The two others went over seemingly well and this one is not only a different angle and the opposite side, but by far the cleanest of them all.

Yes - sometimes I do, lol.
Troy - for the lighting we used 5 Alien Bees (flashes encased in a shoebox sized container) mounted on stands all fired remotely via Pocket Wizzards. One facing the nose on the opposite side, two facing front side from the back, one facing the side and one facing rear. I also had a speedlight mounted on the camera. We were hoping the Pocket Wizzards would sync so both Pete and I could shoot together but as it turned out there was a delay resulting in my camera firing after the flashes went off. Pete got the first set, I took the second and Pete wrapped up on the last run each time slightly altering the lighting. As it turns out there is a Wizzard available that compensates for the delay allowing the camera to fire in sync with a delayed flash. Something to consider if you ever decide to share Wizzards with a friend.

How so? The fact that Matt Hicks can't see past all the noise in my image or
the revelation that Indecline has not a single POTW nor SC within his spectacular portfolio of over 350 images from the Northwest?

I love that Mitch had to go run to ObsCar to complain that his picture wasn't doing as good as he thought it would, and that since the name attached to the photo said "Mitch Goldman," it deserved an automatic SC and PotW. I'm not a fan of the shot, especially since it's being touted as a bridge shot when there's barely any bridge visible below the locomotive.

I sort of liked the post about Howard the ignorant slut who has forgotten everything about photography.
The noise isn't a big issue to me. Not sure why Hicks thinks it's bad, but I do agree with him in that it's there.

I love how anytime I post something I can always expect a negative comment from you - how about we end that in 2011?
Posting on Obscar was done on an impulse yet was simply a way for me to gauge reaction of this image from a unique audience, a small group of photographers that consider themselves aficionados of the non-standard wedge so often seen on RP.
I'm sorry you don't like the shot, Chris. I imagine if Pete elected to post on RP and his name were attached, perhaps you would think differently.
I will admit I am rather puzzled as to how a screener can come upon a photo such as a backlit action steam at night shot and simply not recognize it as any more unique or creative then the dozen or so diesel roster shots prior. I encouraged admin in the past, as have others, to consider being more flexible with the SC (what if one screener doesn't like glint, or urban scenes, or steam). However, an SC is what it is - it's a favorite of one particular person who happens to be screening at the time. In lieu of that as an effective way to promote images that stand apart from the norm I once again suggest to admin, in a win win situation, to promote such images via an alternate method such as the EC or similar where such photos can be more easily found by visitors erroneously searching "most popular" and finding instead accidents, Darwin awards and women.
My name has absolutely nothing to do with it. Twenty six favorited should confirm that the picture being discussed is somewhat more unique then the norm. The PC was a nice secondary method to keep an image from being buried after 24 hours but in lieu of all the linking it would seem that has become more a contest of who has the most friends on Facebook or followers outside of RP.
To those who appreciate my contributions, I sincerely appreciate it and have found no better "badge" to have attached to my images then your name either as a favorite or much welcomed comment. Thank you!
