Default 300D Observations

I've had my 300D for three or four weeks now and like so many before me, I really like this camera. One thing, however; it seems more difficult to get go results in gray, cloudy conditions than I'm used to shoting slide in my Elan 7. Sunny, pristine days are no problem. Night time shots, I'm finding I'm having better luck the more I shoot. However, yesterday shooting in Hamlet I was not impressed with the results. I'm sure it's me and not the camera. But has anyone else had the same lousy outcome in such conditions?

And a rejected photo judged too dark by th screens.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I didn't buy this thig just to shoot in great weather!
